This is Not the End
“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Psalm 42:11
When you think you are alone in your suffering, remember David. He was called to be a king, not only a king, but the greatest king Israel ever had or would have. How can we possibly relate to such a man? The answer is in the question: he was a man. He had no special superpowers, as one might think, but he was a mere mortal with pain and sorrow, fear and anxiety, just like us.
David faced some pretty outrageous difficulties. He was a future king, stuck in the life of a shepherd. He was chased after, wanted dead, hiding in caves. He must have had thoughts racing in his mind, but rather than give in and give up, he reminded his soul to praise the Lord. Wow!
If we understand the soul's makeup, which includes our mind, will, andemotions, it makes sense that our words have an impact. Thoughts of the mind can strengthen the will, which drives emotion. They work together yet separately. The beauty of this verse is that it reminds us of our control over the soul. As David reminded his soul that it was not the end for him but that God had plans and a future for him, we can do the same.
When you are down, tell your soul to get up and praise the Lord. When life seems to be getting the best of you, remind your soul that God is still on the throne, He is in control, and He will not fail or forget you.
Stand tall when the world seems to be crashing around you, and remind your soul that this is not the end. Get up and praise the Lord. Hope again in the Lord, set your eyes on Him, and know His eyes are still on you.
